Chief of Police University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Position Number: JB4048 Introduction (Description of School/College/Dept/Program) Job Summary Chief of Police The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, a nationally ranked public institution in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for its next Chief of Police. This is an on-site leadership role. Reporting to the vice chancellor for finance and administration, the chief of police (COP) administers the university police department and ensures that essential law enforcement, security, and emergency services are readily available and effectively and efficiently rendered to members of the university community and users of university facilities. This position advises university leadership regarding university-wide strategies to be implemented to prevent crime and enhance the safety, security, and well-being of the university community. The COP directs the overall departmental operations with an operating budget of $4.2 million and supervises all departmental employees, including approximately 31 sworn police officers. Qualifications Minimum qualifications include: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. At least 10 years of law enforcement experience, including four years of recent experience at the command level (lieutenant or equivalent or above). Certified or eligible for certification as a law enforcement officer by the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board, including having: U.S. citizenship A valid driver's license Nounpardoned felony convictions Nodomestic violence convictions Evidence of effective leadership and management skills within a law enforcement environment, including supervision, coordination, motivation, delegation, communication, and involvement of others in decision-making and effective budget management. Demonstrated commitment to and track record of success related to engagement and inclusion; attracting and developing diverse staff; First Amendment and social justice issues; prevention and response to sexual violence and sensitive crimes; and community policing; as well as evidence of having effectively infused these values into the culture and training in their staff/department. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and authentically with various stakeholders in a complex organization or environment, including developing effective communication pathways with subordinates, and mature listening, verbal, and written communication skills externally, including communicating with external media organizations effectively. Demonstrated ability to proactively establish positive working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and other diverse and dynamic constituencies. Preferred qualifications include: Advanced training/education evidenced by either a master's degree or post-baccalaureate degree by the time of hire in criminal justice, police science, public administration, or a related field AND/OR evidence of the successful completion of an advanced law enforcement leadership development program such as the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, or Southern Police Institute.
