Postdoctoral Researcher

I am pleased to offer a postdoctoral position in my lab in the Eco-sustainable Marine Biotechnology (BlueBio) department of the Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn in Naples. The topic of the project will be the investigation of the role of lipid-derived secondary metabolites in diatoms. Special focus will be on prostaglandins, PUFA-derived molecules well characterized in animals as hormone-like molecules involved in many physiological and pathological processes. The project aims to understand their physiological and ecological role in diatoms and other planktonic organisms. Other secondary metabolites and pathways known to be targets of prostaglandin will be also considered. The project will start focusing on two main model species of the lab, Skeletonema marinoi and Thalassiosira rotula , but will then be extended to other species holding the pathway. Technique: gDNA and RNA sequencing; bioinformatic and data mining tools; microalgae culture technique and chemical extraction; biochemistry and molecular biology technique for gene expression and functional analysis. The goal will be to assess, among different species, strains and organisms the differences in the prostaglandin pathway composition and expression; the type and quantity of prostaglandin molecules synthesized; the properties of the main enzyme in the pathway, the COX; role inside and outside the cells.
