Coach and Competitor Development Manager


Department: Volunteer and Competitor Development


Location: Motorsport UK, Bicester Motion.


Contract: 12 Month FTC


Hours of Work: Full Time (37.5 hours per week). Core hours are 09:00 until 17:30, Mon – Fri.


Line Manager: Head of Competitor Development


Direct Reports: None.


Grade: D


Salary £35,000 - £37,000


Role Purpose


This is a key role to oversee the successful design and delivery of Motorsport UK’s Coach and Competitor development programmes.

The successful candidate will deliver and lead a programme of coach education and development as well as designing and implementing a new ‘Developing Driver Programme’ which will ensure accessible competitor development opportunities to support a positive sporting experience.


Primary Objectives


The primary objectives associated with this role will be:


  • To lead and manage resources and budgets allocated to the respective programme area ensuring successful delivery against key objectives
  • Provide regular reports on the progress, implementation and effectiveness of the Motorsport UK Coach Development programme, the Developing Driver Programme and any other relevant initiatives undertaken.
  • Maintain KPI dashboard on Smartsheets, reporting on progress, risks, opportunities and outcomes for all required KPIs and metrics
  • Work with Marcomms on the key projects including ‘Getting Started’ in motorsport, Coaching and Developing Driver Programmes and develop an annual plan of activity linked to community needs, strategies and KPI’s.


Additional Responsibilities


Coach Development

  • Establish a long term coach development strategy which considers the future sustainability of the motorsport coaching workforce and ensures all competitors have access to suitably qualified coaches at all levels from grassroots to elite.
  • Lead the design, development and implementation of existing and new coach education programmes and resources. Lead on the development of new courses, content and resources where required.
  • Liaise with 1st4Sport Qualifications to ensure that qualification delivery is in line with the qualification framework, and that candidates are registered with the awarding body.
  • Work with 1st4Sport Qualifications to ensure that Motorsport UK become an accredited and endorsed delivery partner for the Motorsport UK Coach qualification.
  • Support the delivery, identification and development of Course Tutors and Assessors and; Management of the assignment of tutors, selection of appropriate venues, plus all other logistical requirements for all courses.
  • Manage the integration of the Motorsport UK ‘Coach Licence’ including licence benefits package such as coach discounts, merchandise and insurance. Establish a re-assessment process for licence renewals
  • Liaison and engagement with internal and external stakeholders including Association Schools, Clubs and Teams to embed the coaching culture into all participation and performance environments.
  • Working closely with Marcomms, maximise participation levels for coach education programmes in alignment with agreed KPIs.
  • Working closely with the finance team, manage costs to ensure efficiency and increased revenues from coach education courses to align with agreed KPIs.
  • Ensure that the Coach Development Pathway is promoted in a positive manner at local, regional and national level, engaging with Association schools (ARDS, ARKS, BARS) to align and complement the existing instructor pathway infrastructure.
  • Lead the development of CPD programmes/modules and its integration into coach education, development curriculum and the competitors pathway.Coordinate and support a strategy for
  • Delivery of coach qualifications, ensuring a quality service is delivered throughout the UK.Lead
  • The co-ordination and organisation of coach education courses including communication with candidates on the application process, pre course reading, assessments, and Coaching Hub login, organising payment, workshops and webinar delivery, keeping registers of attendance, course completion records and gathering candidate feedback.
  • Ensure that all Health and Safety regulations, EDI and Safeguarding issues are considered and implemented through all Coach development programmes as required.


Competitor Development

  • Support the establishment of the Developing Driver Programme and Centres including the creation of a Centre accreditation application pack, the design of Minimum Operating Standards and the communication of the outcome of the accreditation application as well as the maintenance of the Developing Driver Programme status and guidance on the use of branded materials and communications.
  • Ensure that the Developing Driver Programme is delivered in line with the project objectives and KPI’s. Work closely with respective departments to support this initiative in order to deliver the best outcomes for the overall programme.
  • Create and oversee a ‘menu’ of Driver Development masterclasses which external stakeholders can select and buy into to enhance their environments (such as Junior championships and teams) and raise the standard of competitor more widely than the Academy and Coaching programmes.
  • Work closely with Sporting to engage with partner association schools such as ARDS, ARKS, BARS and AHASS to ensure that there is consistency in delivery of training opportunities to ensure the first interaction that participants have with motorsport is a positive one.
  • Work directly with, and support, participants to ensure their views and experiences shape Motorsport UK’s participation offers, delivering innovative, meaningful and co-produced participation work which creates real change and protects the future of motorsport.
  • Take full responsibility and accountability for budgeting, monitoring, evaluation and assessing impact of all programmes, projects and events under the participation theme.
  • Review Motorsport UK’s participant base to better understand barriers to continued participation, how participants got into the sport, and what would keep them returning time and time again.


Core Competencies


Educated to degree level or with an equivalent vocational qualification in a sport related discipline and/or equivalent experience within sport development sector.


  • Experience of sport development and/or working within a sports context
  • Experience of working with or for, a National Governing Body in sport
  • A passion for and experience and understanding of coach and/or participation development in sport
  • Commercially astute to ensure the programmes delivered are viable
  • Proven ability to translate strategy into execution and delivery
  • A proven ability to build strong networks and relationships with key external individuals and partner organisations and through them drive results.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, ability to prioritise own workload and the commitment and tenacity to meet challenging timescales in a dynamic environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex messages at a high level
  • Good communication and negotiation skills and ability to manage expectations
  • Experience of managing National campaigns. programmes or initiatives
  • Able to identify areas for improvement and use initiative and problem-solving skills to improve performance


Desirable – if needed

• Experience of working in motorsport in a coaching or driver development capacity

• Experience and knowledge in managing the design, content creation, delivery and evaluation of programmes and initiatives in sport

• Relevant NGB Coaching Qualifications or certification from coaching related bodies.

• An awareness and understanding of the motorsport landscape in the UK
