Job Description

Based in Trappes, France, Eramet Ideas is staffed by experts who work closely with site-based operational teams. Eramet Ideas has expertise in mining, extractive metallurgy and recycling, and helps to improve the Group's short-term operating performance, while developing long-term projects in support of the strategic roadmap.

The Innovation Protection Manager is responsible for overseeing the protection of the company's novel technologies and intellectual property, including processes, equipment and materials. This role involves working closely with R&D and legal teams to identify patentable innovations, trade secrets and other proprietary intellectual property, managing the patent application process and Freedom-to-Operate risk.

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the IP strategy with the support of R&D and legal teams
  • Plan, prepare, and coordinate the process of innovation protection to facilitate decisions on R&D innovation ideas.
  • Define and progress new fields relevant for protection, leading technical IP brainstorming with expert teams.
  • Contribute to the building and updating of competitors' patent landscapes, detecting opportunities and threats within the industry
  • Seek out new inventions within the company that are patentable and:
    • Conduct initial interviews with inventors to document the scope of new inventions,
    • Manage and carry out freedom to operate and patentability studies,
    • Prepare all relevant materials for patent applications, including writing descriptions and designing drawings,
  • Manage and instruct patent attorney firms in the submission and prosecution of patent applications to the appropriate patent offices.
  • Collaborate on external partnerships, such as joint development agreements and consortiums, to further innovation goals.
  • Lead the patent surveillance system (using Orbit software) and setting up alerts.

About You:

  • A graduate degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related technical field. A Ph.D is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a technical role within an R&D environment, with a strong background in technology and intellectual property, particularly patents.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, ability to work effectively in a team, analytical thinking, proactive approach to problem-solving, and the capability to perform significant research and draw valid conclusions.
