Position Summary Reporting to the Clinical Managers, This unique position will provide the Nurse with a role in both the Emergency Department as well as the Critical Care Unit. Our ED is most often the first point of contact for our patients; it is a fast paced, highly acute environment, led by a well-rounded multidisciplinary team of ER physicians, Physician Assistants, RN’s and RPN’s. The ED is also home to our dedicated Mental Health Triage team and our See and Treat Clinic. The Critical Care Unit is an intensivist-lead closed model with a dedicated Respiratory Therapy Team. Our CCU nurses actively support our RN-lead Critical Care Response Team throughout the hospital and have opportunities for involvement in research projects and continuing education. The ED/CCU Resource team nurse will be fully trained in both areas, with the opportunity to float between the units as patient volumes and care needs change. The RN will be responsible for providing evidence-based, comprehensive, safe, effective and ethical nursing care to all patients in the Critical Care and Emergency Departments. Mandatory Qualifications Graduate of an accredited college or university nursing program Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario Current three (3) years’ experience in a critical care unit Current one (1) year experience in an emergency department Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification Current Paediatric Advance Life Support (PALS) certification Basic Cardiac Arrhythmia Interpretation course completion Successful completion of Critical Care Certificate or equivalent Ability to work in a Critical Care Response Team capacity Preferred Qualifications Triage Certificate Trauma Nursing Care Certificate (TNCC) Successful completion of Emergency Nurse Certificate Program or an equivalent Member of RNAO Demonstrated competence with Wound Vac Systems Required Competencies Demonstrated ability to work within a Total Patient Care Delivery system in which regulated health care professionals practice to their full scope adhering to the practice standards as defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario Proven critical thinking skills, creative problem solver with a solution focus and patient centred approach Demonstrated ability to communicate and use effective interpersonal skills with colleagues and other members of the BCHS and external partners Ability to multi-task and set priorities in a high intensity and rapidly changing environment Demonstrated competence in patient assessment and care planning Demonstrated ability to interpret cardiac arrhythmias, describe their hemodynamic consequences and usual treatment approaches Demonstrated knowledge of life saving medications, intravenous vasoactive medications, paralytic agents, as well as general drug dosage calculation, administration of continuous medication infusions and patient monitoring for medication effects Demonstrated ability to recognize the signs and symptoms of cardiopulmonary emergencies and initiation of advanced interventions to stabilize a patient. Demonstrated competencies in phlebotomy, IV initiation, care for central venous access devices, epidural management. Assisting with the initiation of life saving procedures such as, intubation, airway management, defibrillation, external pacing, and transvenous pacing. Effective management of airway support including mechanical ventilation, BiPAP ventilation IV Infusion pumps, oxygen delivery systems, telemetry packs, glucometers, non-invasive blood pressure, specialty beds and overlay mattresses, closed chest tube drainage systems, and wound management systems, and transduced pressure lines (e.g., CVP, Arterial,) Mature, reliable individual with excellent attendance record and able to work all shifts Primary Responsibilities Also Include Safety (patient, worker & workplace) is a BCHS Corporate Priority.
