Job Description

Alzheimer's Research UK is the UK's leading dementia research charity. We're working to revolutionise the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia. But we will not stop there.

With your support, we will keep going until every person is free from the heartbreak of dementia.

We exist for a cure.

Why we want you

We are looking for people from South Asian communities in the Nottingham area to join our network of Dementia Community Champions.

Dementia Community Champions increase knowledge and understanding of dementia, brain health and dementia risk factors.

You will help other people from South Asian communities who:

  • May face inequalities to health information and health services.
  • May face cultural barriers and stigmas around such diseases.
  • Are underrepresented in participation of health research.

What you will be doing

In your role you will be:

  • Holding events to share dementia information.
  • Sharing leaflets and other resources.
  • Speaking to local people about their experience of dementia and signposting them to appropriate support.

We will provide you with training and give you all the tools, information and support you need.

Where and when

The project will run in Nottingham from October 2024 to January 2025.

You will need to:

1) Attend in person training over 1.5 days: 18th and 19th October 2024, The Indian Community Centre Association, 99 Hucknall Road, Carrington, Nottingham NG5 1QZ.

2) Hold at least two events in your capacity as Dementia Community Champion from October 2024 – January 2025.

Who

All volunteers must be 18+ and from a South Asian Community in the Nottingham area.

A good understanding of English is required. If you can also speak another language such as Gujarati, Punjabi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil or Hindi that may be helpful but is not essential.

The skills you need

  • Passionate about raising awareness of dementia.
  • Strong local community connections.
  • Confident in public speaking and one-to-one interactions.
  • Able to adapt communication style to different audiences.
  • Multilingual abilities (beneficial but not essential).
  • Comfortable seeking support when needed.

The benefits for you

  • Increase knowledge and understanding of dementia in your community.
  • Feel good doing something rewarding and worthwhile.
  • Meet new people and have new experiences.
  • Become part of the Dementia Community Champions network.

You will also be reimbursed for reasonable out-of-pocket expenses.
