ISIS Neutron and Muon Source is a world-leading centre for research at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory near Oxford. The suite of neutron and muon instruments give unique insights into the properties of materials on the atomic scale. Producing neutron beams by the spallation method involves a complex engineering infrastructure to accelerate particles to high energies.

The ISIS accelerator operates continually throughout the year, with regular shutdowns scheduled for maintenance and upgrades. The Magnet Power Supplies (MPS) Group are responsible for the operations and development of all power supplies for the magnets on the accelerator. The range of equipment includes DC power supplies from 3 kW to over 1 MW, a 10cell 90 MW resonant circuit, and pulsed power systems with rise times below 100 ns for 5 kA and 40 kV.

About the role and a summary of key duties & responsibilities

The MPS group are developing design capability for the pulsed power supplies section. These power supplies operate at high voltages, tens of kV, and are designed to provide the load with large impulses of energy for specified times and repetition rates. These power supplies typically use energy storage elements such as capacitors or pulse forming networks to provide the energy for the load. The power supplies are generally bespoke pieces of equipment that are designed for specific loads such as pulsed magnets or electrostatic plates, to produce the required changes in magnetic or electric fields respectively.

We have a great opportunity for an industrial placement student to in the MPS group for 12 months and play a vital role in contributing to the development of this design capability. As an industrial placement student within the MPS group, you will be involved in every aspect of the project lifecycle.

Your work will be challenging and varied and will involve gathering requirements, modelling and simulating power supply sub-systems, prototyping and testing power supplies and reporting results. During your year at ISIS you will be exposed to operational power systems and gain relevant engineering skills through a combination of on the job-learning and formal training where required. If you perform well then there is the possibility of a sponsorship and a graduate placement which is subject to availability within the group.

Essential:
  • Currently enrolled on an undergraduate degree course and returning to university/studies to complete your undergraduate degree following the placement (S)
  • Are required or have requested to take an industrial placement year (S)
  • Have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the placement (S)
  • Able to commence employment in summer 2025 (S)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of electrical / electronic circuits (S & I)
  • Demonstrates willingness and ability to work both independently and as part of a team (S & I)
  • Self-motivated, enthusiastic, innovative, logical approach to problem solving, organised, reliable and collaborative (I)
  • Able to communicate to both a technical and non-technical audience (S & I)
Desirable:
  • Evidence of practical experience through university labs (S & I)
  • Evidence of experience using CAD and/or ECAD software (S & I)
