The LMS is a world-class research laboratory where scientists and clinicians collaborate to advance the understanding of biology and its application to medicine. Funded by the MRC as part of UK Research and Innovation , the LMS has a collaborative working culture and new state-of-the-art building based in the heart of West London in the Hammersmith Hospital Campus (W12).

The LMS aims to deliver transdisciplinary team science, in synergistic interaction with Imperial College and the wider national research environment. Part of achieving this, is to recruit new talent and support postdoctoral scientists to become world leaders in their area of science.

Allowances

Additional allowances comprise a £1,000 lump sum Settlement Allowance plus a yearly Training Allowance of £850 in the first year, paid in monthly instalments. The Training Allowance increases to £1,300 in year two, and £1,800 in the third year.

Job Description

Overall purpose:

A new opportunity has arisen for a 3 Year Postdoctoral Research Scientist to work in the Lymphocyte Development group headed by Professor Matthias Merkenschlager. This position is expected to be filled by the successful candidate from December 2024.

This project will focus X-linked competition, a newly discovered process by which X-chromosome sequence variation alters organismal development and skews the expression of X-linked sequence variants in a cell-type-specific manner (Buenaventura et al., 2024, Nature Genetics, published online 26th July, DOI 10.1038/s41588-024-01840-5 ). X-linked competition is unique to XX individuals and appears distinct from other known forms of cell competition that eliminate unfit cells from the developing organism

  • To contribute to the development and maintenance of the group's experimental or computational infrastructure as appropriate


Person Specification

Education / Qualifications / Training required (will be assessed from application form):

Essential:
  • PhD or equivalent experience


Previous work experience required (will be assessed from application form and at interview) :

Essential:
  • Experience in human or mouse genetics, cell and molecular biology, human iPS / ES cell culture / differentiation or functional genomics is essential

Desirable:
  • Expertise in the biology of cohesin / CTCF and computational skills would be a substantial advantage


Knowledge and experience ( will be assessed from application form and at interview) :

Essential:
  • Ability to develop and apply new concepts
  • Ability to independently carry out experimental and / or computational projects and analyses
  • Creative approach to problem solving
  • Good understanding of computational biology methods
  • Great attention to details
  • Good written communication skills in English

Essential:
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and the ability to deal with a wide range of people
  • Good oral communication skills in English

This role qualifies for endorsement by UKRI for a UK Global Talent Visa, for which the successful applicant is likely to be eligible to apply.
