Job Description

The Nuclear Transport Operations (NTO) programme is planned and delivered by the Nuclear Transport Operations Group (NTOG) which includes working with multiple Defence and Industry stakeholders. In this joint endeavour the DNO team is the NTOG HQ and is overall accountable for planning and delivering the programme and for coordinating inputs from the other NTOG organisations and for engaging with wider NTO stakeholders such as civilian emergency authorities, military sites and Regulators.

Within the NTOG HQ the purpose of the Operations function is to drive planning and delivery of transport operations. This post will deliver the leadership to ensure Transport meets Defence Nuclear Enterprise programme requirements in a safe and secure manner.

This post is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Person specification

You will be leading the delivery of operations within Nuclear Transport Operations Group (NTOG). The teams role is to ensure the delivery of Transport Operations is conducted in the most efficient, safe and secure manner.

Your responsibilities will include:
  • Lead the Transport Operations Delivery Team to deliver safe and secure transport operations for Defence Nuclear Material (DNM) in support of the UK Nuclear Deterrent programme.
  • Conduct duties as the Prime Bronze Site Commander, when rostered, in support of the DNO Transport Nuclear Emergency Operations (NEO) response.
  • Supervise the Nuclear Transport Operations Officers (NTOO) during the conduct of DNO Defence Nuclear Transport Operations ensuring that they meet mandated safety and security requirements.
  • Act as a Senior Operations Officer (SOO) managing the conduct of the operations in the Operations Room
  • Act as the intelligent customer for the development of new operational equipment, to ensure that it meets operational requirements.

You will seek to empower staff to deliver a fit for purpose transport group whilst embedding a culture of accountability, transparency, and compassionate leadership, and create the conditions that allow team members to contribute to culture change. Instil the values that permit reasonable challenge, giving team members a voice but moving conflict on to resolution. This post will strive to coach and develop the team members, setting development targets and offering advice.
  • Due to security constraints, this post is exempt from hybrid working requests. Requests for flexible and condensed working patterns can be considered but may be limited. Candidates should consider this and must discuss with recruiting line manager before submitting an application.

Required Skills:
  • Leadership of teams in demanding high-paced environments.
  • Experience of working in staff environments with responsibility for planning and producing orders/instructions.
  • Experience of contributing to policy development and/or assurance.

Desirable Skills:
  • Experience of working in a Defence Nuclear Enterprise organisation with knowledge of policies and procedures across the nuclear enterprise.
  • Experience working in programme/project management.

Experience of working in a logistics transport organisation.
