About the Opportunity

We are currently recruiting for Project Managers to join our Radioactive Waste Management and Disposal business. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary business (including chemists, physicists, geologists, engineers, safety case specialists, mathematicians and project managers) that delivers a range of projects on behalf of both UK-based and international customers.

Our Waste Management, Disposal and Safety Case teams have led the field of research and assessment work related to the safe management and disposal of radioactive waste, for over 30 years. The team has a wide breath of both nationally and internationally respected expertise which underpins the science, technology and engineering to allow the safe disposal of radioactive waste. You will be involved in managing a diverse range of consultancy projects undertaken for our customers in the UK and overseas. The vacancy provides an excellent opportunity for those wishing to develop their careers in our technically and commercially challenging business.

Key Responsibilities include:

You will be responsible for the management of a range of consultancy, applied R&D and site investigation projects for customers including radioactive waste producers, radioactive waste management organisations and regulators, both in the UK and overseas. You will be expected to manage a portfolio of small to medium sized projects and be able to provide a hands on approach to the management of cost, schedule, scope and quality. A strong stakeholder management and client facing background is highly preferable as you will be the clients project interface. Responsibilities will include:
  • Management and delivery of multiple projects (approx. qty 5 - 15) with a combined value of circa £5M / year approx
  • Hands on management of the delivery of assigned projects ensuring that the work is conducted in a safe, timely and effective manner in line with the relevant procedures.
  • Delivery of projects to the budgeted margins, effective contract changes management and communication throughout the project lifecycle including the active management of change process, application of variations and the associated internal and external governance processes.
  • Direct interface with Clients to develop business opportunities; build relationships and to communicate on project progress and proactively manage change.
  • Prepare and present formal monthly progress reports as part of business governance and client review.
  • Prepare and maintain project documentation including Project Definition Document, Quality Plans and other documents as required.
  • Prepare specifications and support the process of contractor selection and contract placement.
  • Providing accurate and timely information, data and reports regarding the project status, resourcing levels, activities and performance.

Here's what you'll need:
  • A degree or equivalent qualification in an appropriate discipline.
  • Formal Project Management (APM PMQ preferable) qualification
  • Suitable relevant project experience within engineering/research consultancy projects, including the application of project management processes within a research/safety case led project
  • An excellent understanding of project planning (including scope management, Work Breakdown Structures, estimating and scheduling) and project control (including cost control, project forecast, risk management and change management).
  • Proven ability to understand and communicate effectively on project financial issues, technical progress and project risk and mitigating measures.
  • An understanding of the legal, tendering and contract process to support the success of the business.
  • Proven experience of hands-on budget monitoring, commercial awareness and experience at managing contractors.
  • Strong understanding of the need for Quality within the project environment and familiarity with the use and structure of Quality Assurance documentation.
  • Experience of participating in negotiations with both clients and the supply chain.
