The salary for this role is £54,376 (inclusive of a Market Premium Payment (MPP)), and onsite working is expected for 1 day a week (3 days during probation period).

Job Description

This role can be based at any of the following sites; Culham, Oxfordshire.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions.

The Role

Are you eager for an impactful opportunity in the field of fusion energy? Join our team as a Senior Engineering Analyst specialising in Magnetic Engineering, helping develop next-generation Superconducting Magnet systems.

In this pivotal role, you will evaluate design concepts using established tools, develop new evaluation methods, and oversee the evaluation work of others. Additionally, you will manage processes for engineering evaluation and provide technical leadership, contributing to the advancement of Magnet Systems and related temperature maintenance systems.

Your responsibilities will encompass planning, coordinating, and performing work on Magnet or Cryogenic systems design, while advocating for proper processes and tools. Furthermore, you will manage small projects, function as a technical expert, and coordinate teams to develop solutions for fusion and experimental devices, ensuring critical operational issues are addressed effectively.

If you have effective communication and technical writing skills, along with experience in specific environmental factors like vacuum, radiation, and transient magnetic fields, and experience supervising multi-disciplinary teams, we would like to hear from you.

Additional Responsibilities:

- Develop evaluation methods and agree assessment criteria.
- Supervise teams of analysts.
- Complete process documents and author technical reports. Check the reports of colleagues are to a suitable standard.
- Train colleagues in key skills to the established standard and supervise them in developing further skills.
- Ensure your own work is completed following UKAEA processes.
- Manage complex work packages and coordinate contributions from multi-disciplinary teams.
- Drive organisational and technical enhancements, shaping policy and standards within magnetic engineering.
- Foster knowledge transfer and mentor junior engineers, providing guidance and advice beyond the Magnetic Engineering Group.
- Serve as an external reviewer for other UKAEA projects, while also cultivating positive relationships internally and externally, supporting business development initiatives.

Qualifications

Essential Requirements:

- Demonstrable experience in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties and experience in the preparation of bids and proposals.
- Demonstrable experience in structural and thermal engineering, materials, and manufacturing methods.
- Experience of engineering at least one of the following:
- Electromechanical systems, Heat Exchangers, Electrical Insulation, Thermal Isolation, Composite Materials, High Vacuum, Magnets (Resistive or Superconducting), Cryogenic Systems.
- Effective people skills for building positive working relationships.
- A relevant engineering degree or suitable equivalent.
- Experienced in guiding the delivery of technical design, manufacturing or test work in a subcontract organisation.
