Job Description

CDI is a local charity that has been providing information, advice and counselling to children, young people and families who live, work or study in the London Borough of Croydon since 1978.

We offer advice & advocacy support, a Young Peoples Team, counselling, Health Education workshops, Mental Health Support Teams in educational settings, Outreach & Talkbus, school counselling, Parent & Infant Relationship Service, C4CC workforce webinars and a Parent/Carer phoneline.

Community Counsellor

In this role, you will:

  • Deliver quality short term, trauma informed and attachment aware counselling
  • Carry out robust assessments referred to CDI by those wishing to seek counselling and by our partner agencies.
  • Use agency outcome measures, evaluation, and feedback tools to track and record the young persons therapeutic journey.

About You

You will:

  • Be a graduate or post graduate level. Counselling Diploma or equivalent
  • Be a Registered Member or an Accredited Member of the BACP or another appropriate professional body (e.g. UKCP, HPC)
  • Have two years minimum duration of personal counselling or psychotherapy.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Qualifications:

Essential Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of delivering individual counselling with children and young people
  • Knowledge of working in a community and/or school setting
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding, Child Protection & Safeguarding
  • Vulnerable Adults and associated procedures Evidenced knowledge of Equality, Inclusivity & Diversity and an overt commitment to providing inclusive, anti-racist, culturally competent service delivery
  • Comprehensive knowledge of current issues and challenges faced by children, young people and families.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Attachment Theory, Trauma-Informed practice, child development and person-centred theory.
Essential Skills
  • Excellent organisational skills including competency with IT packages ie. MS Office/Outlook
  • To be able to deliver counselling sessions competently on a time limited basis
  • Crisis management skills and working with risk
  • Skilled at working individually, as part of a team and in a multi-agency model
Essential Abilities
  • Ability to communicate effectively with parents/carers and professionals
  • Ability to practice counselling within a theoretical context
  • Ability to explore transferential material within clinical supervision and line management meetings.
  • Ability to monitor, measure evaluate impact of counselling sessions and client's progress
  • Ability to practice within BACP professional and ethical guidance.
Essential Qualifications
  • Graduate or Post graduate level Counselling Diploma or equivalent
  • Level 3 Safeguarding

  • £31,597.65 per annum (pro rata 35hrs FTE)
