Executive Director

FTE £52,000

ACT is a UK-wide charity which supports actors’ children by giving grants and advice to actors who are parents. Acting is an unpredictable and harsh industry, difficult for actors to negotiate if they become parents: ACT makes it possible.

Part-time 21 hours per week (not including lunch hours).

Salary £31,200 (FTE £52,000).

WC1 office and family-friendly flexible working.

NEST pension scheme.

Following the retirement of ACT’s executive director after 25 years’ service, the Trustees seek another organised, self-sufficient, kind and creative leader. You will have operated an efficient and accurate grant-making scheme. You must be skilled in charity financial management, be able to support a charity board, oversee marketing and communications, and line manage two staff, and freelancers.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Experienced in supporting a charity board of Trustees.
  • A clear and engaging communicator in writing and speech.
  • Experienced in charity financial management.
  • Experienced in grant-making processes and policies.
  • Experienced in line management of staff and volunteers.
  • Experienced in marketing and communications.
  • Empathetic, welcoming, inclusive and non-judgemental.

Desirable:

  • Experience of welfare and advisory work with children and families.
  • Digital marketing experience.
  • Office management, IT, CRM & Wordpress experience.
  • Knowledge of contemporary fundraising.
  • An understanding of challenges faced by actors.
  • A passion for stage and screen.

Reporting to

The Chair of Trustees, or their Deputy.

Job Description

1. Family Support

  • Line manage the Head of Family Support, and become able to cover the role in her absence.
  • Forecast, plan and pay grants.
  • Be the gatekeeper for new enquirers and coordinate ACT’s CV eligibility panel.
  • Ensure strategic direction.
  • Support sub-committees and working groups as needed.
  • Play a vital role in ACT’s safeguarding policies and procedures.

2. Trustees and governance

  • Organise, administer, service and support Trustees’ meetings and work.
  • Oversee membership and organise and administer the AGM.
  • Ensure the Charity Commission records and reports are accurate and timely.
  • Write the Annual Report.
  • Ensure all other statutory reports and responses are completed.

3. Finance

  • Line manage the part-time bookkeeper and check Sage data and reports.
  • Prepare budgets and management figures for the Trustees.
  • Ensure cashflow, and cashflow reporting to the Trustees.
  • Liaise with the investment manager.
  • Handle income and payments including grants, payroll and pensions.
  • Support the auditor and other professionals as needed.

4. Fundraising

  • Line manage any fundraising freelancers and staff.
  • Ensure best practice in thanking and communicating with donors.
  • Ensure Gift Aid is promoted and claimed.
  • Coordinate the fundraising programme including small events and sales.

5. Marketing and Communications

  • Develop and monitor ACT’s marketing strategy.
  • Be responsible for most content and implementation.
  • Coordinate website content and development.
  • Oversee social media and any freelance or other workers.
  • Ensure accurate and relevant advertising and listings.
  • Liaise with related charities, Acting for Others, PIPA, Equity and other partners.
  • Ensure good communications with ACT’s members and donors.

6. Infrastructure

  • Be responsible for the ACT office, IT and services.
  • Be ACT’s lead person for data protection, fire and health and safety.
  • Maintain accurate and secure records, including personnel, finance and governance.

7. Any other duties of a similar level of responsibility.
