Job Description

We are looking for motivated and passionate professionals to join as a Security Technician in the SSGs London Team which has its headquarters based in Woolwich.

You will have the chance to work on a variety of technically sophisticated projects protecting UK Defence and Government sites.For most of the time you will be working in the field travelling between various government and military sites. We will provide you with the choice of a non-liveried company vehicle to work in your region and you can opt in to use this for personal use.

Person specification

We require professional individuals to serve SSG customers on a wide range of security systems including Intruder Alarm (IAS), External & Perimeter Intruder Detection, Video Surveillance (VSS), Automatic Access Control (AACS) and Control Room IAS and VSS & AACS Standard Monitoring Systems.

Specific system training will be provided.

Other duties include:
  • Being the key point of contact to customers on a day-to-day basis
  • Attending to maintenance and installation enquiries during core hours
  • Participating in an on-call rota to provide 24-hour emergency cover for the service
  • Conducting checks and audits on customer systems
  • Accurately estimating costs of materials and labour needed for minor works, additions and alterations
  • Ordering materials from suppliers and providing equipment lists to the Project Manager
  • Providing technical assistance at all levels and building solutions to technical and design problems
  • Undertaking trade supervision for subcontractors
  • Ensuring all job-related administration is accurate and reported in a timely way
  • Adherence to work-related and site related health and safety guidelines

Your time will be typically spent working within your allocated region, however as SSG are involved in overseas projects there are opportunities to work for short periods of time for our overseas teams. This role will also require operating away from home providing support within the region and to the other SSG UK regional teams, staying in overnight accommodation as required.

Once onboarded, it is accepted that successful candidates will be expected to achieve the higher Developed Vetting security clearance level; assistance will be given on the application process.

Allowances:

The following allowances are payable in addition to basic salary:
  • Market skills allowance (4,000)
  • Outer London Weighting RRA (1750)

Where applicable, the following allowances are payable in addition to basic salary: travel time (where travel is external to core hours), on-call allowance, recall-to-duty allowance, environmental (Radiation) allowance, travel and subsistence package when working out of your region and overtime.

Employment Hours:

You will be contracted to work 37 hours a week, typically between 08:00-16:00, however through travel time, overtime and on-call duties you will have the opportunity to increase your potential earnings. For example, some SSG technicians regularly carry out an optional 10+ hours per week in travel time and overtime.

Memberships:
  • Engineering Council
  • Security Institute

Qualifications:
  • HNC in Electrical or Electronic Engineering or equivalent
  • NVQ/SVQ Level 3 in Electronic Security Systems (IDS, VSS, etc) or equivalent
  • ONC/OND in Electronic Security Systems (IDS, VSS, etc) or equivalent

Environmental Factors and Hazards:

The applicant may be required to undertake occasional work within Radiological and Explosive Storage areas.

Licences
Full UK Driving Licence with a maximum of 6 points.
Driving a vehicle is a requirement of the job; field technicians are tasked from home and are provided with a vehicle to carry their tools and equipment to/from sites which are remote and not accessible by public transport and in response to SSGs 24/7 On Call Rota.

Qualifications
A Recognised, relevant Engineering background, Engineering Apprenticeship and/or Engineering qualifications. I.e. Intruder Detection Systems, Perimeter Intruder Detection Systems, Video Surveillance Systems and Access Control Systems.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance.
