Duties

* You will install, modify, repair new/existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment; steam-heating, steam generation, and hydraulic systems, steam generators, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum, circulating pumps, and radiators.
* You will remove, clean, replace, pack, and seal defective parts of utility, supply, and disposal systems such as traps, sections of broken tile pipe, sewer lines, and leaking drains.
* You will install, maintain, and repair a variety of heating and air conditioning units to include: oil lines, air lines, water lines, steam lines, valves, pipes, flexible hose connections, or other related parts.
* You will trace system malfunctions and replace fixtures such as safety devices, heating elements, valves, strainers, coils, and other related minor controls.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is the ability to do the work of a Pipefitter without more than normal supervision performing common tasks including: 1) Installing, modifying, and repairing new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as, steam-heating, hydraulic systems, flash and expansion tanks, condensate, vacuum systems, radiators and circulating pumps; 2) Work from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion and operation of various piping systems and equipment; 3) Independently select tools and testing equipment to use for repairing, troubleshooting, or modernizing heating and control units.

This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

Several vacancies may be filled.

A forty hour work week is typical for this position.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

May be required to perform shift work, work overtime and/or be "called back".

This position is being announced at the full performance level.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms and where the systems and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. The work involves standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. may handle, lift, carry, and set up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, may list and carry items that weigh over 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done inside and outside, and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. May be required to make installations and repairs in areas where bad smelling fumes are present. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. The work may involve exposure to the possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, burns, and infections. May occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
