We work within the Energy, Security and Technology sector to deliver solutions to defence and security clients. With UK defence estimated to have a significant contribution of carbon emissions and considering the latest Net Zero commitments, there is much to do to adequately respond to the climate emergency and wider sustainability issues. Successful delivery needs to engage large numbers of people across a wide range of projects - estates, infrastructure, platforms, support services - and it needs to be done at pace. As a member of the Defence and Security sustainability network, you will have a key role in working with our clients, supply chain and internal teams to translate commitments into delivery and ensuring win-win outcomes.

This means you will need to be able to work on your own initiative and draw on the experience of those around you to deliver in a complex and challenging environment. Collaboration with the leadership team, sustainability experts and those in project delivery will be necessary to improve sustainability performance for us and for our clients. You will be able to see the bigger picture and know where the detail is important. You will have expertise in an area such as sustainability, environmental management, net zero, energy transition, circular economy, social value, business transformation, cultural/ behavioural change or climate change adaption/ resilience.

The key focus of this role is with the Submarine Delivery Agency on SSN-A delivery. You will report on and drive progress of sustainability within the programme.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Understanding SDA client and our sustainability commitments and requirements to engage with key stakeholders including Industry Partners. to drive and embed sustainability at every stage in the programme.
  • Identifying key sustainability risks, impacts, opportunities and benefits in the programme and recommending control measures to deliver a sustainable product and to make positive impact in the decision-making process
  • Reporting sustainability progress including compliance and requirements in various working groups (SSNA / SDA) and leading the Through Life Working Group. and reporting to SSNA Support Service and SDA monthly.
  • Reviewing sustainability requirements such as net carbon, climate change, social value and circular economy to identify opportunities to demonstrate compliance with SSNA Sustainability Vision Statement and Strategy.
  • Enabling and delivering through others as part of wider cultural evolution (behavioural change). This will include communications and delivering sustainability training appropriate to us and client audiences.
  • Understanding key challenges and enablers (for example commercial, procurement, design team, suppliers and working with them to overcome these challenges by drawing from experience and knowledge to make sustainability 'business as usual'.
  • Producing case studies and sharing with wider groups within SDA and other MOD Departments to highlight how sustainability is embedded in the programme at every process and steps.

Here's what you'll need:
  • Experience and knowledge in sustainability principles
  • Suitable sustainability qualification
  • Experience of developing and implementing Environmental Management System (ISO 14001) including producing and evaluating legal compliance register, environmental risks register, waste and materials management plan.
  • Experience in completing Sustainability Appraisal, DREAM or BREEAM assessments for Infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with multi-disciplinary engineering or defence teams, from technical to senior levels
  • Proven track record in motivating people to better outcomes and instigating lasting culture change
  • Ability to influence, negotiate, build trust and relationships with clients and colleagues
  • You must be a UK National and have the ability to obtain SC level security clearance, which includes being resident in the UK for the preceding 5 years.
