The City of Wylie Parks Division is seeking an Equipment Operator I position. Do you enjoy working outside year round? If so, this position may be just what you are looking for! The selected applicant uses tools and equipment required to maintain, repair, and construct streets, drainage, water distribution systems, parks, and other common areas of the City. Performs related work tasks as required based on the assigned division.

SUPERVISION

Supervision is provided by the division supervisor or designee.

Staff in the Parks Division work four ten hour days.

Essential Job Functions

  • Uses and maintains various types of tools and equipment related to the assigned division. These may include mowers, trimmers, hand saws, skill saws, chain saws, drill presses, bolt cutters, pick axes, air compressors, jackhammers, cutting torches, various weight hammers, hitches, frames, electrical equipment, or others based on the assigned division.
  • Works effectively with other crew members to complete projects accurately and efficiently.
  • Exercises good judgment to work safely and use equipment properly, taking proper safety precautions and wearing proper safety equipment at all times.
  • Actively identifies, reports, addresses, and follows up on problems and incidents. Actively seeks and recommends operational changes to the direct supervisor.
  • Follows safety regulations, City and department policies, and procedures.
  • Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City, following the rules of safety and laws of the State of Texas.
  • Sets up barricades when and where needed for the safety of employees and the public.
  • Keeps equipment, tools, and work areas clean. Immediately reports damaged tools and/or equipment.
  • Reads, understands, and follows written and oral job instructions. Interprets maps, drawings, and plans as appropriate.
  • Submits written reports legibly and completely. Maintains accurate files and records in hard copy and/or electronically on a computer. Completes work orders daily
  • Communicates effectively orally and in writing with co-workers and others.
  • Able and willing to work outside in all kinds of weather, including extreme heat/cold, rain, snow, and more.
  • Presents a clean and well-groomed appearance.
  • Subject to after-hours call-out for emergencies, as defined by supervisor.
  • Clean, maintains, and services tools, equipment, and work area.
  • Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
  • Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers and others.
  • Other duties as may be assigned.
  • Effectively interact with all levels of co-workers, management staff, citizens and the public.

    When assigned to Parks:
    Assist in performing maintenance activities for the Parks Division.

Minimum Job Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent. Valid Driver's License. Must have Texas Driver's License within 60 days of hire. Preferred experience varies based on division assignment. Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management after hire.

Specific licenses and certifications vary based on division assigned; the list below is not to be considered all-inclusive.

When assigned to Parks:
Possession of a Texas Certified Chemical Applicator's License preferred (issued by the Texas Department of Agriculture in lawn/ornamental and weed control).

CALL-OUT: On a rotating basis

  • Retirement benefits with Texas Municipal Retirement System. Contributions by payroll deduction. Employee contributes at 7% level. City matches 200% of employee contribution. Mandatory.
  • Deferred compensation - Nationwide and Edward Jones. The City does not contribute. Employee contributions by pre and post-tax payroll deduction. Optional.
  • Health/Dental/Vision/Prescription insurance PPO plan. City pays full premium for employee, approximately 47% of dependent premium.
  • Flexible Spending Account - allows for pre-tax deduction for eligible medical expenses as well as dependent care expenses. Optional.
  • Life insurance - 2x annual salary through New York Life. Fully paid by City and 1x annual salary through TMRS. Total of 3x annual base salary.
  • Long-Term Disability for all full-time City employees.
  • Twelve paid holidays: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day and Friday following, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and one floating holiday.
  • Vacation - Earn three weeks of vacation in the first year.
  • Sick leave accrues each full pay period.
  • Sick leave conversion to vacation leave (once per year in January).
  • Sick leave buy back (if budget allows; once per year).
  • Bereavement leave, military leave, jury duty leave.
  • Longevity pay $4 per month of service; paid once per year.
  • Workers' compensation benefits
  • Tuition reimbursement - $2,000 per year.
  • Direct Deposit - City of Wylie Payroll will deposit employee paycheck to any bank accepting wire transfers.
  • Family and Medical Leave Policy as described by federal legislation.
  • Free Recreation Center employee membership.
  • City pays every two weeks. (26 pay periods per year)
