Job Description

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Licensing: Possess a valid Pennsylvania Practical Nursing License.
  • Clinical expertise in urological nursing preferred.
  • Experience with monitoring post procedure patients or critical care nursing preferred.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Ability to deal compassionately, professionally, and courteously with patients, their families, physicians, and fellow TUSC staff.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:
  • Full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods of time. Some bending, lifting, and stooping required.
  • Normal color perception and normal or corrected visual acuity.
  • Hearing normal, or corrected to normal range.
  • Manual dexterity to operative keyboard, calculator, and photocopier.
  • Involvement with scheduling, management of information, physicians, staff, hospital personnel, and patients. Occasional high stress work may require dealing with angry, demanding patients and/or personnel.
TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Safe and clean environment in an ambulatory center setting.
  • Exposure to communicable diseases.
  • Exposure to chemicals common to a clinical setting (e.g. formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde).


DUTIES AND TASKS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  1. Ensures the comfort and safety of each patient.
  2. Individualizes care according to each patient's special needs.
  3. Follows safety and infection control procedures.
  4. Identifies patient, reviews medical record for consent, H&P, PAT's, and sees that all records are completed pre-procedure.
  5. Accurately performs and documents pre-procedure nursing assessment.
  6. Understands the use, placement and interpretation of all monitoring equipment.
  7. Is familiar with the dosage route of administration, action, adverse drug reactions, and reversal medications of all medications commonly used in the surgery suite.
  8. Identifies an emergency situation and is able to effectively intervene.
  9. Has working knowledge of all equipment and procedures.
  10. Continuously assesses patient condition and maintains accurate documentation pre, intra, and post-procedure, and informs physician.
  11. Instructs patient pre-procedure on routine discharge instructions and reviews these instructions with responsible party post-procedure.
  12. Maintains accurate documentation of narcotics dispensed.
  13. Counts narcotics each A.M. and P.M. (when surgeries/procedures are performed) with another clinical staff member.
  14. Assists with orientation of new personnel.
  15. Communicates relevant information to physician, Nurse Administrator, and nursing staff to maintain continuity of care.
  16. Protects patient confidentiality.
  17. Implements and adheres to all TUSC policies.
  18. Monitors patients and directs LPN/Nursing Assistant/Technician during procedures and provision of patient care.
  19. Assists the physician with surgical procedures.
CLERICAL NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Takes and records weight, blood pressure, pulse of each TUSC patient.
  2. Reviews patient's current medications, dosage, and dosage schedule on each visit and records on the surgery/procedure record.
  3. Lists patient's medical allergies on red allergy sticker on the upper left-hand corner of the inside of the medical record.
  4. Reviews allergies on each visit and records additions as necessary.
  5. Ensures patient confidentiality by using privacy curtains and doors in each examining room.
  6. Obtains diagnostic studies, (e.g., labs, x-rays, path reports, etc.), prior to visit and places same in front of medical record for physician's review.
  7. Provides instruction and information to patients as per physician's orders recorded on medical record to include, but not limited to:
  • Provides educational instructional materials to patients
  • Provides and reviews special diets
  • Prepares patients for diagnostic studies, and procedures by:
  • Completing lab requests
  1. Administers medications as ordered by physician.
  2. Has working knowledge of insurance criteria as it pertains to where patient is required to have labs, x-rays, and other procedures performed.
  3. Knows physician preferences and implements appropriately.
  4. Properly disposes of contaminated waste following Universal Precautions and OSHA regulations.
  5. Documents all aspects of patient care according to the policies of TUSC.
  6. Files, checks medical record, performs pre/post procedure calls, assists with follow-up program when assigned.
