The Oncology Data Specialist (ODS-C) has a critical role in capturing the data that both supports the hospital's mission to provide excellence in patient care and impacts cancer research, treatment, prevention, and screening programs. This is a fully remote position responsible for abstracting all reportable malignancies and reportable benign cases according to the guidelines established by the Standard Setters. Additionally, the ODS-C will Identify potential new reportable cases and provide lifetime follow-up within the requirements of the Commission on Cancer (CoC) and the NYS DOH.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Abstracting: Analyze medical records source documents to determine primary site, stage, treatment, primary cancer characteristics. Records pertinent information in text and coded form for all reportable cases diagnosed and/or treated at CMC in accordance with New York State and national guidelines.
- Case finding: locate all internal and external sources of cancer-related patient encounters, including all cancer-related pathology and radiology reports; all radiation and medical oncology consults and treatment summaries; all inpatient admissions and outpatient encounters. Utilize all cancer related death certificates, all cancer conference case lists provided to the registry for inclusion and reporting by hospital-based physician practices.
- Data quality assurance: Quality control of cancer registry data; visual review of abstracts, edit checks, continual review of processes to ensure accuracy, and reviews state/national data rules and regulations for program compliance.
- Quality Review: Participate in annual quality review of analytic cases in accordance with cancer registry policy and CoC Standard 6.1.
- Follow-Up: Perform and maintain complete and accurate follow-up on analytical cancer cases within the registry database in accordance with CoC standards. Utilize resources available in addition to reaching out to outside sources, as needed, for necessary information.
- Support the hospital's Cancer Program accreditation with strong cancer registry operations, creation of policies and procedures, utilization of NCBD quality tools and knowledge of the how all the standards support quality patient care.
- Serve as mentor or trainer to include the supervision of case abstraction by non-certified cancer registry staff.
- Attend and participate in Cancer Committee and cancer registry meetings. May serve on committees to address standards and special projects required by the CoC.
Required Skills and Experience:
- Associate's degree required
- Licensure - current Oncology Data Specialist certification required.
- Minimum 1-2 years' experience in a healthcare setting
Preferred Skills and Experience:
- Associate's degree required; preferably in the fields of Cancer Information Management and/or Health Information
- Experience - Minimum 1-2 years' experience in a healthcare setting, Oncology and/or cancer registry experience preferred
Physical Requirements:
Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., typing, use of computer and keyboard).

Pay Range Disclosure:
- $31.50 to $38.00 per hour
