Facilities and Services consists of the Project Development and Engineering group that manages both Capital Construction and small projects across the NMSU System; Facilities Operations, which is organized in traditional shops and is responsible for the physical operation and maintenance of NMSU Las Cruces I&G buildings.
Classification Summary:Under general supervision, responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repairs of plumbing systems and fixtures. Requires the ability to understand and work from blueprints and specifications. Knowledgeable of uniform plumbing codes. Frequently reports to a Maintenance Supervisor.
Classification Standard Duties:Installs, repairs and maintains chilled water, steam, heat, water, gas, drainage, sewage and other plumbing systems. Operates reamers, threading discs, sewer tapes, pipe cutters, snakes and other plumbing equipment and hand tools. Inspects joints, valves, pumps, boilers, heaters, sinks, commodes, tanks, valves and other plumbing system components to locate malfunctions and repairs or replaces when necessary. Studies plans, drawings, specifications and work orders to determine work requirements and sequence of repairs and/or installations. Performs preventative maintenance work as required.
Required Education, Experience, Certification/License, Equivalency
Required Education:High School diploma or GED certificate.; Required Experience:Two (2) years of experience related to the standard duties as outlined.; Equivalency:None; Required Certification/License:NM Journeyman Plumbing License or NM Journeyman Gas Fitter License. A valid NM Drivers License is a requirement for the job.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE:Knowledge of steam, water, natural gas, fire hydrant, fire sprinkler, and waste water distribution systems maintenance and repair.; SKILLS:Skilled in the installation, maintenance, and repair of steam, water, natural gas, fire hydrant, and waste water distribution systems.; ABILITIES:Ability to perform preventative maintenance according to published guidelines. Ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade. Ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures.

Environment: Work involves almost constant exposure to unusual elements: i.e. extreme temp, toxic chemicals, biohazardous materials, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, loud noises, other potentially dangerous materials/situations that require safety precaution/protective equip
Physical Effort: Considerable physical activity. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of the job.
Lifting Requirements: Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to 50 pounds.
Risk: Work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
