Job Title: Higher Apprentice Mechanical / Electrical Engineering

Location: Broad oak, Hilsea, Portsmouth

What you will be doing:

During the Engineering Higher Apprenticeship you will develop knowledge, skills and behaviours across a range of different engineering disciplines. During this time you will gain valuable experience in electrical, mechanical and electronic manufacturing engineering environments, which will culminate in you completing an End Point Assessment with a view of becoming a Test Engineer.


The Engineering Higher Apprenticeship is a 3-year programme where you will spend time in a variety of areas within the manufacturing business. You will undertake a range of engineering activities and gain valuable experience across the project lifecycle. During the first 2 years you will undertake a HNC in Engineering on a day release basis.


The first 3 months of your apprenticeship will be spent undertaking initial engineering, health and safety training in the Skills Development Centre located in Portsmouth Naval Base. On successful completion of this training you will transfer to our manufacturing site, located at Broad Oak in Hilsea. During your third and final year, you will complete an End Point Assessment to confirm that you have gained the required knowledge, skills and behaviours, to successfully complete the apprenticeship.


Specific activities could include:

Test Engineers utilise engineering drawings, data and documentation in order to undertake the measuring, diagnosing & verification of technical performance on a wide range of electrical and electronic assemblies and components. This covers sensors, automatic voltage regulators, wiring harnesses and other bespoke assemblies. Test Engineers require knowledge and expertise in the use of a wide range of common and specialist measuring and diagnostic testing equipment (such as Digital Multimeters, Oscilloscopes, and other Automated Testing Equipment), in order to follow a technical testing specification and process to ensure individual components and assemblies meet the required specification.


What Qualification will you get?

By the end of the apprenticeship you will obtain:

• Level 4 Apprenticeship Certificate (Engineering Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship Standard

• Higher National Certificate in Engineering

• Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English (If not previously achieved)

Export Control / Security:

Please be aware that many roles at BAE Systems are subject to both security and export control restrictions. These restrictions mean that factors such as your nationality, any nationalities you may have previously held, and your place of birth can restrict the roles you are eligible to perform within the organisation. All applicants must as a minimum achieve Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Many roles also require higher levels of National Security Vetting where applicants must typically have 5 to 10 years of continuous residency in the UK depending on the vetting level required for the role, to allow for meaningful security vetting checks.





Qualification requirements

5 GCSE A*-C or 9-4 (or equivalent) Including Maths & English

&

A minimum of 96 UCAS points (240 point old system), or equivalent (excluding UCAS points gained at AS level) including Maths, Engineering or Science.
