Job Description

Locum Consultant Ophthalmologist, 7 month FTC commencing Jan 2025

This is a full-time post, covering an established position until our new substantive colleague joins us in February 2025.

A refreshing new healthcare career in an island community

We have an exciting opportunity for GMC Specialist Registered Consultant Ophthalmologist to join the group from January 2025.

About the Medical Specialist Group

We are a partnership of currently 55 Consultants, which, under contract, provides specialist medical services to the Guernsey Health Service with a healthcare model that is different and separate from the NHS. As well as providing contract care, the MSG consultants also provide private care which is remunerated separately, but is carried out in both MSG and PEH facilities as there are no other private facilities on the island. MSG administration and secretarial staff also support a consultant private practice. Tertiary care services are supplied by hospitals on the UK Mainland, mainly Southampton University Hospital, usually through contracted services.

The Princess Elizabeth Hospital is a modern hospital with approximately 145 beds and strong clinical links to UK mainland centres, particularly Southampton General Hospital and Kings College Hospital.

Our vision is to be internationally recognised as a centre of excellence for clinical care and loved by the Guernsey community.

Our purpose is to use our expertise and compassion to provide outstanding patient-centred services that improve the health of the community we serve.

If you’re searching for a dose of sea air or a better work-life balance, our island community has it all. Renowned for its sandy beaches and mild climate, Guernsey offers an idyllic, family-friendly lifestyle with excellent connections to the UK, France, and beautiful nearby islands.

Our flexible working patterns and short journey times give you more time to enjoy life, whether that’s a paddleboard and beach BBQ with the family after work, an afternoon hiking the cliffs, or catching up with friends at one of our many award-winning restaurants.

About the role

This is a full-time post, covering an established position until our new substantive colleague joins us in August 2025. Minimum Requirements:

Applicants must hold full GMC registration and be on the UK GMC Specialist Register for Ophthalmology.

In addition to the appealing lifestyle that Guernsey offers, we have an attractive benefits package which includes:

  • A generous salary of £140,156 per annum (the income tax rate for Guernsey is currently a flat 20%).
  • Private medical insurance for you and any qualifying dependants.
  • Additional private practice supported by MSG & HSC (room, indemnity, secretarial & billing support are all provided).
  • Accommodation for the period of your tenure.
  • Hire Car for the period of your tenure.
