Customer: Southeastern Trains LTD. This project is a TSSSA (technical support and spares supply agreement). Slade Green depot is a customer site where we have our own office and stores space. The customer maintains and operates the trains. As a TSSSA we provide technical support to our customer to enable them to carry out effective maintenance of the trains. Our technical support engineers are called on by the customer for advanced fault finding and rectification where the customer lacks the skills, knowledge, or equipment to carry out such tasks. All incidents causing a delay or cancellation to a train in service are investigate by the technical support engineers who then create technical a reports explaining what has happened and why. They will then identify measures to prevent future occurrences. The technical support engineers monitor data from the trains remotely to spot potential failures and highlight them to the customer for repair before they cause an in-service incident. Reliability campaigns are run by the technical support engineers. Scopes of work, instructions, technical briefs, and lessons learnt documentation are all created by the technical support engineers to further assist the customer. Materials for all maintenance activities are provided by Siemens for our customer. The materials team liaise with suppliers to ensure all material is available when required and that defective components are correctly repaired.

What will an apprentice at Slade Green be doing?

  • Train familiarisation - Spending time with the customer's maintenance team doing routine maintenance. This is the best way to find your way around the train.
  • Working with and being mentored by the technical support engineers. Looking at on and off train diagnostics, fault rectification, experiencing how to write a technical report. In down time the technical support engineers will spend time on trains with apprentices to teach them how the various systems work.
  • Health and safety - Creating and reviewing risk assessments. Depot safety tours.
  • Projects - This could be creating a reliability improvement, something to make maintenance easier or specifying a new piece of equipment
  • Spending time at other Siemens sites - Not every module of an apprenticeship can be covered at Slade Green depot. From time to time, it may be necessary to work at other Siemens sites to gather the required evidence to complete a module.
