Job Description
Grading: 4, 5 or 6 depending on experience and qualifications About the job/team The Light Imaging Facility of the Epigenetics and Neurobiology Unit at EMBL Rome, Italy, is looking for an imaging expert who will participate in the activities of the facility as part of a collaborative international environment. The facility provides access to state-of-the-art imaging instruments, supports training and develops technology in collaboration with research groups and industry. Your role If you are passionate about making an impact in life science research, love staring at the scope for hours and debugging code in your spare time, have a service-oriented personality, and are motivated to develop technology for the wider community we want to hear from you. Your responsibilities include: Carrying out work requests using tissue sample preparation methods (from basic IF/RNA FISH to spatial omics) followed by imaging and data analysis Proficiency in the use of high-end microscopes and associated software, including Crest V3 spinning disk confocal microscope, Nikon AX/R scanning confocal microscope, Leica Thunder, Olympus VS200 slide scanner, Alpenglow open top light sheet system Contributing to the training of staff and students, ensuring safe operation and maintenance of our instruments Developing experimental and/or bioimage analysis protocols to support research projects Implementing novel sample preparation protocols, analysis pipelines and imaging methods Contributing to the management of the facility, such as newsletters and antibody stocks Engaging in technology development projects (e.g., spatial omics or expansion microscopy) and ensuring their implementation in a facility setting You have: MSc or PhD in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Bioengineering or related subjects Advanced knowledge in light/fluorescence microscopy Experience in tissue or cell sample preparation methods (from basic IF and RNA visualization up to clearing techniques and expansion microscopy) Experience in at least one high level programming language (e.g., Python) Proficiency with common bioimage analysis packages such as ImageJ, QuPath and Napari Excellent manual dexterity and organizational skills Pro-active attitude and hands-on approach to problem solving Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to colleagues and students Teamwork spirit and strong interpersonal skills with highest ethical standards Fluency in written and spoken English You might have: Previous exposure to any one or several of these areas: super-resolution microscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy (FCS, FLIM, smFRET), fluidics, oligo design for RNA or DNA detection Knowledge of multiplex imaging, spatial transcriptomics or bioinformatic analysis of -omics data Knowledge of machine learning or deep learning for image analysis Experience in creating automation pipelines using tools like Arduino or FPGA’s Why not?
