Job Description
Graduate Mechanical Engineer – Permanent – Cheshire - £26k to £30k
Our client is a leading Science & Engineering services company working in a large variety of industries. They are seeking highly motivated and technically able engineering staff to join a successful consultancy team, working on technically challenging projects for industrial clients. They are looking for confident, capable staff who can take project responsibilities in their stride, help us grow their business and develop robust client relationships.
An early-career Engineering Consultancy vacancy has become available within their Tribology department which specialises in Forensic Engineering and Materials, Failure Analysis and Component Life Extension. A wide variety of work is undertaken for their customers based mainly in the UK although occasionally abroad. Their work involves finding robust solutions and providing reliable advice on problems of importance to their customers.
The job will require a practical understanding of mechanical engineering, tribology and failure investigation and experience working in a laboratory environment on projects. These may include forensic examination of mechanical components analysis and problem-solving, including calculations of mechanical systems.
Site visits, critical thinking, a forensic approach to problem solving and attention to detail are all a necessary part of the role.
Good communication skills are an absolute essential. The candidate must be able to produce clear concise written reports and be able to formally present project findings to technically informed customers. The candidate will be able to work to controlled budgets and fixed time constraints.
The type of work requires someone with practical skills, willing when necessary to use hand tools to investigate component assemblies; measure and assess component geometry using CMM, profilometry; or inspect components using state of the art scanning electron microscope (SEM) or various optical microscopes. Practical computing ability is essential and there are opportunities to develop a working knowledge of CAD and FEA as well as several bespoke bearing analysis and statistical software packages.
Requirements
The successful candidate will need to be self-motivated, able to prioritise work and learn quickly from practical investigations and from working alongside experienced colleagues. It is essential that the candidate has:
Problem solving skills
• Good theoretical and practical problem-solving skills
• A creative and original approach to finding solutions that will achieve customer objectives
Technical Expertise
• A broad mechanical engineering knowledge
• A basic knowledge of tribology and the role of the subject in all moving systems
• An understanding of how engineering components operate and might fail
• An ability to synthesise information and data to rapidly focus on the core issues
The following attributes would be of benefit:
• Mechanical laboratory experience
• Testing and Instrumentation experience
• Good commercial awareness (ability to work with customers at all levels)
• Customer focus (excellent written and verbal communication)
• An understanding of the techniques of root cause failure analysis
• An understanding of maintenance and engineering good practice
Qualifications
A first class or 2.1 degree in mechanical engineering
Travel
Occasional UK and International travel.
Experience
A successful candidate is likely to be a recent graduate or up to 2 years post-graduate experience
