The University of York Students’ Union (York SU) is on the hunt for a dynamic Chief Executive Officer to support our vibrant and diverse student community. This is your chance to achieve meaningful change, champion innovation, and ensure every student has an unforgettable university experience.

Location: York

Salary: £70,000 - £75,000

About York SU

The University of York Students’ Union is the representative body for 22,000+ students who come from all over the world to study at York. Over 60 years old and growing rapidly, the Union provides a wide range of charitable and trading services and activities designed to improve students’ lives, create student employment opportunities, and support students to make the most of their time at York. Among the largest registered charities in North Yorkshire, we aim to be amongst the best students’ unions in the UK.

Who we are looking for

We need a leader who will drive further growth and opportunities for the Students’ Union.

We’re looking for someone who is excellent at developing and nurturing senior stakeholder relationships and identifying partnerships to ensure the interests of our members are met. You will be able to speak confidently in articulating the value and position of the Students’ Union to the University, whilst being able to empower and support student leaders to do the same. You will have the experience to credibly operate at Board level, offering support and challenge as needed.

It is an incredibly challenging and interesting time for UK higher education, and like all universities, there are significant risks and opportunities for the University of York. Our new CEO has to be capable of engaging in strategic conversations with University leadership about the current and future HE policy environment. You need not necessarily come from a higher education or policy background (although knowledge and a broad understanding of the sector is important), but you must have the capacity to set out how we can work with the University to support student recruitment, retention, academic performance and employability.

You will be confident in setting bold performance standards and provide both the challenge and support for our teams that will ensure we continue to enhance our offer for students. Financial and commercial acumen and knowledge of good governance are also essential.
