It is an exciting time to be joining Ashford and St Peters NHS Trust. The CPE team need an additional inspirational, energetic & experienced midwife to join their team.

You would need to be confident in a teaching environment and have experience in mentoring. This role is predominately supporting shop floor learning on the wards through bedside learning. We want you to support our junior workforce with drug rounds and help them to achieving their competencies in a safe learning environment. We want someone who is nurturing that will empowering our students, new colleagues & international colleagues to become confident and competent in the workplace.

ASPH are proud to provide a homebirth service, have an amazing alongside birthing centre, we have a level 3 Neonatal Unit and our midwives get a range of experience from supporting uncomplicated pregnancies to developing care plans for our high risk maternal and fetal medicine service. An MDT approach is always used within these services, and we work extremely closely with our NICU team to provide the best outcome for babies that require their specialist care.

Main duties of the job


This is a permanent post.

We will support you to obtain your PG Cert if you do not hold this qualification and are willing to obtain.

Overview of Responsibilities:

Implement learning from incidents & new initiatives on the shop floor

Support the fetal wellbeing lead in delivering local training

Day to day teaching in the clinical environment - such as supportive drug rounds, triage supportive shifts & ward management supported shifts

Participate in safety huddles to ensure all learning opportunities are accessible to learners

Utilising the SIMs lab and support in simulated learning in the clinical environment

Provide floor support for students and registrants to develop their confidence clinical areas.

Welcome new starters to the maternity unit supporting practically their clinical induction & orientation

Support the development of internationally recruited midwives/nurses.

To participate the development of clinical guidelines and policies

Education and Training:

  • Develop and maintain electronic training databases for midwifery and support staff.
  • Deliver training on designated programmes to address midwifery requirements both in a classroom setting and within the clinical area.
  • Provide mentorship, coaching, supervision and shadowing opportunities to each individual to support their professional development.
  • Produce relevant teaching material tailored to meet specific learning requirements.
  • Actively participate in maintaining your own professional development, identifying your own training needs with Line Manager.
  • To facilitate staff in all clinical settings to gain sufficient clinical competence including IV cannulation, episiotomy and perineal suturing.

Governance and Quality Improvement:

  • Work collaboratively with the Lead Midwife for Clinical Governance to ensure learning from incidents is at the forefront of the training provision.
  • Promote awareness of the national agenda, influencing midwifery services and ensuring that the service reflects current policy.
  • Initiate/participate with projects and working groups in the maternity department.
  • Participate in clinical governance meetings.
  • To support the Midwifery Management Team with identifying and implementing quality improvement projects or service transformation strategies.
  • Participate in the reviews of clinical incidents and give feedback to individuals or groups on any recommendations and lessons learnt.
  • Facilitate the audit of midwifery practice


Clinical & Professional:


  • Maintain clinical competence and expertise in all midwifery practice areas in line with the NMC code and rules and standards.
  • Be a positive role model for midwives and student midwives in relation to midwifery clinical practice.
  • Have a strong visible presence within the maternity unit.
  • Work as a team member, ensuring good communication and collaborative working relationships are maintained throughout the division and at Trust level.

To support the department and organisation by carrying out any other duties that reasonably fit within the broad scope of a job of this grade and type of work.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Further TrainingEssential
  • NMC Registered Midwife
  • Educated to first degree level
  • Practice Assessor or equivalent qualification
  • PGCert or working towards
Desirable
  • Holds a Teaching qualification
  • NLS/PROMPT/ALSO/MOET training
  • Has undertaken any leadership development programmes
ExperienceEssential
  • Experience as a Band 6 midwife having worked in hospital/community setting
  • Evidence of being a team player
Knowledge & SkillsEssential
  • Awareness and understanding of current national and local midwifery issues.
  • A good understanding of the trust vision, values, strategic objectives and key work programmes
  • Confident in public speaking
  • Teaching and presentation skills
  • Ability to initiate change and participate in implementing new policies and procedures
