General Description:
Direct and supervise the technical operation and service activities in Histology. Responsible for the day-to-day operations of Histology Laboratory Interacting with Pathologists and Pathologists Assistant to ensure that specimens are prepared and delivered within an appropriate time for analytical testing.
Interact with Senior Administrator to ensure laboratory services are provided accurately and report to Pathologists for scientific and technical functions.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Unit Specific:
Directs all performance of Surgical Pathology laboratory testing, which includes Histology.
Oversees the day-to-day operations of the Histology laboratory including but not limited to ensuring processing systems are functioning properly and samples are processed in a timely manner.
Supervise the technical staff as it relates to processing of gross specimens for Pathology studies/biopsies.
Interacts with the NCB Pathology Accessioning staff in the performance and assisting of processing frozen section specimens.
Maintain stringent standards for quality identifying any issues which might adversely impact the quality of test results.
Manage the Histology technical staff on the laboratory quality control and quality assurance procedures, technical/process, troubleshooting, improvement procedures, staff training and education programs.
Responsible for Pathological waste disposal and safety policies of laboratory management for laboratory personnel in both Anatomic & Clinical Pathology who work with carcinogenic or potentially carcinogenic substances. As well as responsibility of removing all hazardous waste. Maintain exposure monitoring of staff in Anatomic Pathology and Parasitology annually.
Monitors the hazardous waste manifest to ensure and document by EPA standards that the waste removed from the laboratory is properly delivered to the offsite waste management facility that will store, treat, or dispose of the hazardous waste.
Coordinates the centralization of autopsy services at sister facilities in addition to our own cases preparing and processing autopsy for all four sites.
Responsible for the preparation of cell blocks, slides and special stains for Non-GYN & FNA Cytology specimens from other H+H sites.
Prepare biopsy specimens from other H+H clinics and supervising cell blocks for the EBUS specimens from 11West and provide rapid on-site adequacy evaluation to the pulmonary team.
Responsible for the validation and quality assessment of new equipment and technology (Sakura tissue processors, autostainers, coverslippers and special stain automation.
Establishes work schedules and assigns technical personnel to ensure adequate laboratory coverage.
Prepares any necessary documents for personnel action, time sheets, and overtime authorization.
Evaluates employee work performance and competencies and develops technical skills of staff through didactic training.
Assumes responsibilities from the Director of Pathology and Administrator in activities as product evaluation, test development and QI validation studies.
Prepares and maintains inventory reports of reagents, supplies and equipment ensuring adequacy of supplies.
Oversees the performance, maintenance and storage of the recycling unit and its products.
In conjunction with Environment of Care and the Director of Safety, maintains and re-evaluates chemical inventory on an annual basis, and monitors the storage of alcohol will be kept at a maximum of 40 gallons within the guidelines of the New York City Fire Department.
Provide employees with information and training about hazardous chemicals.
Ensures that Safety Data Sheets for all chemicals in the inventory is available to laboratory staff.
Interact with nursing professionals and administrative staff regarding quality assurance affairs, hospital-wide and maintain documentation on quality assurance data.
Review and edit department policy and procedure manuals as needed.
Oversee department preparation for inspection by regulatory agencies.
Ensure laboratory is in compliance with Federal, State, Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospital Organizations, and the College of American Pathologists regulations.
Perform CAP proficiency surveys and oversee conformity to requirements.
Ensure a safe and clean working environment.
Establish uniform method for monitoring and documenting Formaldehyde and Xylene Vapor in the Histopathology and Parasitology labs.
Plan, organize and directs the activities of hazardous management / waste in the Laboratory.
Required Experience:
1 year Histological Technician experience.
Required Education:
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Required Certifications & Licensure:
Valid certification as a Histologic Technician issued by NYSED, Primary Source Verification required.
Certification in: NYS Department of Education Histotechnologist License.
Valid license to practice as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist (092) issued by NYSED, Primary Source Verification required.
BLS preferred.
Preferred Certifications & Licensure:
Experience ASCP Certification with 6 years technical experience and 0-2 year of leadership/management experience preferred.
