The Departments

Dance

The Dance department supports pupils through Level 1/2 BTEC award and in a wide range of dance styles in the co-curricular Dance School which provides the College pupils with an experience akin to a specialist dance academy. The Dance School caters for over 300 pupils from Reception to Upper Sixth in over 70 lessons per week, ranging in styles from Jazz and Commercial Hip Hop Fusion to Ballet and Tap.

The Dance School has allowed pupils to achieve many accolades including success at regional and national competitions, and successfully auditioning for world renowned dance company performances and training opportunities.

The Dance department is based in the state-of-the-art Richard Cairns Building which boasts a 400-seat theatre and dedicated dance studio space.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Delivery of Dance Games sessions.
  • Delivery of year group taster Dance sessions.
  • Support the delivery of outreach Pelican Primary Dance provision.
  • Delivery of Boarders Dance activities.
  • Choreography for various musicals and plays.
  • Assist and cover Dance School lessons in teaching and logistics.
  • Delivery of Dance activities/clubs as part of the co-curricular programme.
  • Staffing at all Dance School related events.

Sport

The Sports Department consists of 10 members of permanent teaching and coaching staff, typically 10+ assistant teachers who support the delivery of the games programme, and a dedicated Sports Administrator. It has been responsible for numerous international stars including former cricket Ashes winners and current England, and British and Irish Lions players as well as an impressive list of professional athletes, and British and European champions. Based in the astonishing new School of Science and Sport, a very wide and varied games programme is offered.

All pupils participate in twice weekly games sessions, with supplementary sessions for the representative squads in the core sports of athletics, cricket, football, hockey, netball and rugby. Recent successes include National Rosslyn Park Rugby 7s and St Joseph’s College Festival winners, national netball finalists, numerous international athletics vests, Sussex and South East Hockey League champions at U18 and Sussex County Cricket champions. Physical Education is also taught as an academic subject from the Lower Fifth (Year 10) upwards.

The key responsibilities in sport will include coaching up to 7 games sessions per week and being responsible for at least one competitive team each term, including weekend fixtures.

The Role

PGATs are considered integral members of the dance and sport department and will be expected to be assisting with and leading dance and sports sessions from their first day.

Away from dance and sport, they will be expected to be a co-tutor for a group of pupils in a house. This involves overseeing registration, pastoral time, parent liaison and report writing, under the guidance of a more experienced colleague. They will also take responsibility for one evening duty per week in the boarding house they are attached to, as well as being involved in delivering other aspects of the boarding programme.

The exact timetable for this role will depend on the skill set of the person appointed. This varied and engaging set of responsibilities generates a wide range of experience which sets PGATs up extremely well for moving onto full teaching roles in due course.

Safeguarding Responsibilities

  • This role will involve daily contact with pupils and the successful candidate will be engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.
  • All staff and volunteers have a responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom they are responsible and with whom they come into contact.
