REPORTS TO: Manager, Food Service Operations

DEFINITION: Plans, administers, and supervises the operations for the food and nutrition programs of Baltimore County Public Schools. Monitors cafeteria operations for food quality, safety, sanitation, cash and meal accountability, inventory, and production controls. Responsible for the personnel related issues for approximately 250 employees which includes direct supervision of a field representative and cafeteria managers.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
  • Provides direct supervision to one field representative and cafeteria managers.
  • Oversees assigned food services staff and monitors cafeteria operations for food quality, safety, sanitation, cash and meal accountability, inventory, and production controls.
  • Handles personnel related issues and makes recommendations; recruits, evaluates, counsels, disciplines, hires, and recommends termination of staff.
  • Allocates labor and assigns job responsibilities. Adheres to formula for staffing at cafeteria complex.
  • Develops and implements employee training (e.g., sanitation, production, staff development, cashier training).
  • Assists with plans for equipment, new construction, renovations, menus, marketing, recipes, products, and new programs.
  • Assists with planning, conducting, and attending meetings (cafeteria management, cafeteria area, and operations).
  • Monitors and reconciles food services computer program reports, installs computer hardware, and replaces broken equipment as necessary.
  • Communicates with school administrators regarding food service programs.
  • Conducts reviews and audits of cafeterias.
  • Assists with implementing, supervising, monitoring, and promoting all state-sponsored nutrition programs.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, staff, and the public for the purpose of providing information and/or direction regarding available food items and/or food service policies and practices.
  • Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education, Training and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in food & nutrition, food service management, dietetics, family & consumer science, nutrition education, culinary arts, business, or related field from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of four (4) years of experience in the field of food service.
  • Two (2) years supervisory experience in the field of food service.

Licenses and Certificates:
  • Possession of a valid Class C Maryland driver's license, or an equivalent.
  • Certified Food Service Manager - Level I certification preferred.
  • Registered Dietitian accredited through The American Dietetic Association licensed in the state of Maryland preferred.

Note: Other combination of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of food services quality control policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of child nutrition programs.
  • Knowledge of commercial food service equipment.
  • Knowledge of and skill in the use of databases, internet, word documents, spreadsheets and related applications.
  • Skill and ability to maintain accurate records (e.g., data for federal and state reimbursement claims for the school meals program).
  • Skill in supervising employees.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and execute work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and related software and troubleshoot minor problems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work is performed primarily in the field at school cafeteria sites. Work involves sitting, standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Annual completion of continuing education/training in accordance with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Professional Standards for School Nutrition Employees.
Work involves driving to school cafeteria sites and occasionally involves using food service equipment. Work involves being on-call for emergencies, deadline pressure, and frequent interruptions.
Persons appointed to this position are designated as essential-as-needed personnel and may be required to work during emergency events, subject to call to duty, and may be required to work beyond their normally scheduled hours with little or no advanced notice.

GRADE: Grade 08 on the BCPS OPE 12 Month payscale.

SALARY: $89,766 - $141,552.

FLSA: Exempt

RETIREMENT: This position is eligible for the Baltimore County Employees' Retirement System.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (per COMAR) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $109. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.

  • If you have military experience you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Official transcripts will be required upon hire and must be sent via escript/clearinghouse from your university.
